Gypsy Romance – Oil Painting on Canvas

“As it was of old it is to-day –Wherever gypsies go there the witches are, we know” from The Gypsies circa 1882

I was inspired to paint this as a result of coming across some symbols used by gypsies in spells and in writings, paintings and engravings. Repeated two or three times throughout the painting are the following symbols and wishing charms. What started as purely symbolic ended up taking on a feeling of romance.

Each symbol attracts a different part of life’s wishes – success, dreams, love, prosperity and health. I think whoever buys this painting will be a believer in spells! I know I do!

“Nine requisites for a contented life:
Health enough to make work a pleasure.
Wealth enough to support your needs.
Strength enough to battle with difficulties and overcome them.
Grace enough to confess your sins and forsake them.
Patience enough to toil till some good is accomplished.
Charity enough to see some good in your neighbor.
Love enough to move you to be useful and helpful to others.
Faith enough to make real the things of God.
Hope enough to remove all anxious fears concerning the future.”
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

  1. Lesley, this is really weird. I know I have seen this post because I remember the symbols and especially the painting of which I complimented. Do you have this one posted somewhere else or did I dream it?
